A new bill submitted to the Pakistani parliament last week is under discussion, which provides for the establishment of a national council responsible for cybersecurity issues.
The draft “Cyber Security Council Bill 2014” was submitted by Senator Hussain Sayed and aims to create a unified body that will chart policy, guidelines and strategy on cyber security matters, in accordance with best international practices.
The security council's responsibilities will not only include addressing cyber threats, but also facilitating communications and information sharing between the government and the private sector. To achieve this, the council's members should come from both agencies.
So far, no further information regarding the bill has been released. Senator Hussain Sayed emphasized that there is a «critical need» to take institutional actions to combat threats to Pakistan's national security, as cyber warfare is active in the country».
