Gartner: 2013 is the year of smartphones

Top manufacturer in sales emerged in 2013 Samsung, with a market share of 31% (299,794 million smartphones), from 30.3% (205,767 million) recorded in 2012.

2013 was the year of smartphones, at least that is the conclusion drawn from the report that the research firm Gartner made public.

According to the research, in 2013, for the first time, more smartphones were sold than simple mobile phones, which are obviously also cheaper. More specifically, according to Gartner data, worldwide 968 million «smart» devices, i.e., a share of 53.6%, from a total of 1.8 billion mobile phones. Overall the market moved upward compared to 2012, by 3.5%.

The top manufacturer in sales emerged in 2013 as Samsung, with a market share of 31% (299,794 million smartphones), up from 30.3% (205,767 million) recorded in 2012. In second place was Apple with a market share of 15.6% (150,785 million devices) and a significant decline compared to its 2012 sales share of 19.1% (130,133 million devices). The third place is shared between Huawei (46,609 million smartphones) and LG Electronics (46,431 million smartphones) with a market share of 4.8%. The top five is completed by Lenovo with a market share of 4.5% (43,904 million «smart» devices). The remaining manufacturers sold a total of 380,249 million smartphones in 2013 (share 39.3%), compared to 269,526 million devices (share 39.6%) in 2012.

At the operating system level, Android from Google remains the most popular, holding 78,4%. It is followed by Apple with iOS and a share of 15,6% (versus 19,1% in 2012) and Microsoft with Windows Phone and a share of 3,2%. In fourth place was BlackBerry with its percentages shrunk to 1,9%.

According to Gartner's data analysis, the markets that showed the biggest rise in smartphone sales were Latin America (increase of 96.1%), the Middle East and Africa, the Asia-Pacific region and Eastern Europe. The country with the largest increase in smartphone sales was India with a rate of 166.8%, while the «contribution» of the Chinese market was also significant with an increase rate of 86.3%.
