Once, things regarding gender were simple: male or female. However, as society evolves, “discovers» that there are other genders, such as transgender, asexual, intersex and many more.
In a rather pioneering move, Facebook now gives its users the ability to choose their gender from not two, but… fifty different options!
Thus, people who do not have a gender, people who have characteristics that match both genders, people whose sexual anatomy does not fit the definition of male or female, people who do not feel they belong to either gender, can now on Facebook express their sexual preferences more freely, if they wish.
«There will be many people for whom this means nothing, but for the few it affects, it means everything», comments Facebook software engineer Brielle Harrison.
For the implementation of the new options, Facebook consulted activists for the rights of the LGBT community.
