The evolution that all rapidly spreading epidemics that eventually disappear undergo is estimated to affect Facebook.
This is supported by research from Princeton University, according to which the popular social networking platform will lose 80% of its users worldwide within the next three years.
Researchers from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering emphasize that epidemic models can be used to understand mass adoption and hypothesize that «recovery» requires contact with «non-sick» individuals, who in this case are non-Facebook users.
The researchers used a mathematical formula, which they applied by leveraging search data on Google and predict the sharp decline of Facebook, which is expected to lose 80% of its users between 2015 and 2017.
«Using epidemiological models we successfully described how ideas, like diseases, are transmitted among people before eventually disappearing» they concluded.
