Anthropic has acquired Coefficient Bio, a stealth AI biotechnology startup, just eight months after its founding, in an all-stock deal valued at just over $400 million. The acquisition brings a team of fewer than 10 people, nearly all former Genentech, to Anthropic’s healthcare and life sciences division, marking a significant investment in the belief that general-purpose AI can accelerate drug discovery.

The deal, first reported by The Information, values a company that had no publicly known product, no reported revenue and no conventional measure of success. But it had a founding team with rare qualifications. Samuel Stanton and Nathan C. Frey, co-founders of Coefficient Bio, came from Prescient Design, Genentech’s computational drug discovery unit, where Frey led an interdisciplinary team working on biologically-based models and new machine learning approaches to biomolecule design.
Frey has published more than 20 articles in journals such as Science Advances and Nature Machine Intelligence, and won the ICLR Outstanding Article Award in 2024 for his work on genetic modeling for drug candidate discovery.
The startup’s stated ambition was to achieve artificial superintelligence for science. In practice, Coefficient Bio developed a platform that allows AI to design drug research and development, manage clinical regulatory strategies, and identify new drug candidates. It operated as a research-focused entity that never left stealth status.

Dimension , the New York - based venture capital firm founded in 2023 by former Lux Capital and Obvious Ventures partners Adam Goulburn, Zavain Dar and Nan Li , owned about half of the company. The firm , which focuses on companies at the intersection of technology and life sciences, now reports a 38.513 percent internal rate of return on the investment, reflecting the rapid repricing of early scientific bets in the AI space.
The Coefficient Bio team will join Anthropic’s Healthcare and Life Sciences team, led by Eric Kauderer-Abrams, who was hired in 2025 with the express mandate to make Claude the dominant AI model in biology. “We want a significant percentage of all the life sciences work in the world to be done in Claude, in the same way that code is done today,” Kauderer-Abrams told CNBC when Anthropic launched Claude for Life Sciences in October 2025.
This platform, which integrates with tools like Benchling, PubMed, and 10x Genomics, is designed to assist researchers across the spectrum of drug discovery, from literature review and hypothesis generation to data analysis and regulatory submissions.

The acquisition significantly strengthens this initiative. While Claude for Life Sciences offered a generalist research assistant, the Coefficient Bio team brings specialized knowledge, particularly in protein design and biomolecule modeling, that could help Anthropic develop specialized tools for pharmaceutical companies willing to invest in AI that understands their workflows at the molecular level.
