Silent Hill F comes with a lot of mystery and amazing scenery

With a brilliant central character, Konami 's survival horror series returns in a grand and menacing way. Even amidst the eerie fog, Silent Hill F 's picturesque period setting shines with authenticity. Traditional wooden buildings line narrow streets, while streams and small paths crisscross wet fields. The everyday life of the 1960s is everywhere: glossy magazines, old-fashioned toasters, exquisite flower arrangements.

Silent Hill F

Yet beyond this melancholic sense of place, the details that seem most authentic in Silent Hill F are ones that video games rarely excel at. It's the anxiety on the faces of the teenage characters as they exchange caustic insults, the outbursts of emotion written on notes circulated around the school.

We see this finely crafted and often painful world through the eyes of high school student Hinako Shimizu. She’s a “tough girl,” according to her friends. Soon, the series’ iconic fog descends, and Hinako is forced to use her athletic prowess, leaping over obstacles to escape the malevolent mist. She lifts pipes and knocks over crawling monsters, finds ancient keys to unlock doors with ominous decorations. We once again explore a town that has been twisted into hideously personal forms by the protagonist’s intense emotions. The classic Silent Hill ingredients return, but there’s a new freshness and vibrancy here.

Part of this is down to the stunning visuals: they border on photorealistic but are painterly in their eerie beauty. Light naturally diffuses down each cold, bleak street, reflecting off Hinako’s sleek hair and buttoned-up outfit. A carpet of red lilies often unfurls across the fictional mountain village of Ebisugaoka, transforming the setting into a kind of eco-horror. In an otherwise artistically discolored palette, the plants are a vibrant, violent interruption.

Additionally, Silent Hill F is being revitalized thanks to a story written by renowned Japanese manga author Ryukishi07. Hinako is at a critical juncture in her life, still in school but on the verge of an arranged marriage by her abusive, alcoholic father. She is plagued by social anxieties: gossip from friends and the absence of her older sister. This plot is patiently revealed through cutscenes and scattered letters. It's typical video game storytelling, but Silent Hill F offers a charming union of game space and narrative. The town of Ebisugaoka unfolds alongside mysteries, the streets seeming to double back on themselves as this sinister tale unfolds.

You discover further tantalizing details: details of arsenic contamination, toxic gas leaks, and the construction of a massive dam. Are these significant to the monstrous events Hinako must endure, or simply misleading elements of Silent Hill F?

Think of Silent Hill F as a survival horror game that meets Japan's honkaku mystery literature, a story whose origins remain unclear.
