Fram2 Mission: The First Images from Earth's Poles

Yesterday, the Fram2 polar exploration mission was launched with private astronauts. The four-member crew is orbiting above the Earth's north and south poles and has already begun sending back impressive images (of the poles and our planet).

SpaceX has launched the private Fram2 mission. The crew is aboard SpaceX's Crew Dragon Resilience, in a polar orbit around the planet, allowing for views of some of the most remote areas of Earth.

The Fram2 mission took off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center. After a short 10-minute flight, the Falcon 9 released Resilience, which is now in orbit, allowing the four-member crew to capture and publish the stunning images they see from space.

The Fram2 mission is led by Chun Wang from Malta, who funded the mission. He is joined by Jannicke Mikkelsen from Norway, who is flying as vehicle commander, engineer Rabea Rogge from Germany, and Australian explorer Eric Phillips.

The mission will follow a pole-to-pole trajectory that has never been followed by a spacecraft before.

Early Tuesday morning, SpaceX shared a video taken from Resilience, revealing the spacecraft below which one of Earth's poles is visible.

“First views of Earth’s polar regions from Dragon,” SpaceX said in the post.

The expedition took its name, Fram2, from an early 20th-century Norwegian naval ship named “Fram,” which explored the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

Several scientific experiments will be conducted during the mission . One of them includes the first attempt to grow mushrooms in space . There will also be experiments to measure the effects of microgravity on the human musculoskeletal system.

The Fram2 mission is expected to remain in orbit for the next two to four days. At the end of the mission, Resilience will return, ending up in the Pacific Ocean.

This will be the first of many landings on the Pacific coast, as SpaceX tries to reduce the chances of space debris surviving atmospheric reentry and the chances of causing damage or injury on the ground.

Photos from space have always had a great power to inspire people. If this mission manages to capture the beauty and environmental changes at the poles, it could raise awareness about the climate crisis.

Overall, Fram2 shows how space exploration is changing. From being the exclusive domain of government space agencies, it is becoming increasingly open to private individuals and new innovative approaches. It will be interesting to see the data it brings back!
