These restrictions were recently lifted, allowing the company to move forward with bringing bill payment options through WhatsApp. Now, there are signs that WhatsApp has beefed up its functionality with the addition of UPI Lite.

WhatsApp v2.25.5.17 beta version contains indications that the messaging app may soon support UPI Lite functionality.

From these indications, it appears that WhatsApp intends to integrate the UPI Lite feature to enhance its existing payment capabilities.

UPI Lite is an upgrade of UPI, designed for frequent but low-value transactions that don't directly depend on the core real-time banking system. Think of it as an additional wallet linked to your UPI-enabled bank account.

Users have the ability to load additional funds into this e-wallet, allowing them to make frequent, low-cost transactions with greater speed and convenience, without the need for multiple layers of authentication typically required by UPI. This simplifies the process while protecting you from risk, as you only use the amount in the wallet and not your entire bank balance.

Currently, WhatsApp is not listed as a partner app for UPI Lite. On the contrary, competing apps likeGpay, Paytm, PhonePe, and Samsung Wallet are listed as providing this feature. With the introduction of UPI Lite and the bill payment capabilities that have been recognized in the past, WhatsApp seems to be evolving beyond a simple instant messaging app, catering to the needs of millions of users.
