The new camera fits into Raspberry Pi’s broader plans to offer chips and add-ons for developers of AI tools. The company has already released several camera modules (without AI) since 2013. “AI-based image processing is an attractive tool for developers around the world,” Raspberry Pi CEO Eben Uptonin a press release. “We can’t wait to see what our community members can achieve using the power of the Raspberry Pi AI Camera.”

The AI camera is compatible with all Raspberry Pi single-board computers and combines the company's RP2040 microcontroller chip with Sony's IMX500 image sensor (which handles AI processing). As a result, no additional components such as accelerators or GPUs are needed.
The Raspberry Pi AI 12.3-megapixel camera can capture 10fps video at 4056 x 3040 or 40fps at 2028 x 1520. It also has manual focus adjustment. In terms of camera size, it is similar to the Camera Module 3 that Raspberry Pi released last year.
