Microsoft releases urgent updates to Exchange

Microsoft has released hotfix updates to address several known issues affecting servers after installing the March 2024 security updates.

Although the April 2024 HU is optional, it also adds support for ECC certificates and Hybrid Modern Authentication (HMA) for OWA/ECP.

If you have installed the March 2024 SU and did not experience any known issues that were fixed in the optional update and do not need the new features, you can wait for the next Exchange Server SU, which will also include these hotfixes.

With this month's hotfixes, the company fixed a known issue that caused download domains to no longer work as expected in some Microsoft Outlooks. This resulted in embedded images no longer appearing in Outlook on the Web (OWA) and attachments not downloading through the OWA client.

The company also faced a “We can't open this document” error and blocked Microsoft Word document previews in Outlook on the Web (OWA).

The list of issues caused by the March 2024 security updates and addressed in the April Exchange hotfixes also includes:

  • Outlook cached search error
  • OwaDeepTestProbe and EacBackEndLogonProbe fail
  • Unable to edit editing rights option in ECP
  • Outlook doesn't show the unread folder icon
  • The templates add-on is not working
  • Published calendars may not work with an error “This calendar is not available.”

Microsoft is still working on a fix for another issue where calendar printing in OWA may not work unless the keyboard shortcut CTRL+P.

April 2024 hotfixes are available for Exchange Server 2019 CU13 and CU14 and Exchange Server 2016 CU23.

In January, the company announced the end of mainstream support for Exchange Server 2019, saying it would continue to release patches to fix the most recently discovered security issues, but would no longer accept bug fixes and design change requests (DCRs).

Exchange Server 2016 reached its primary end date in October 2020, but is under extended support until October 2025, as is Exchange Server 2019.

The company is now providing Microsoft 365 migration information on its documentation site and guidance to help global administrators decide on the migration path to Exchange Online.
