The Resident Evil 2 Remake mod brings back the terrifying atmosphere of the original game with authentic controls and a fixed camera.

Five years in the making, the Resident Evil 2 Remake mod that adds old-school fixed camera controls is finally available to scare you like it's 1998.

Don't get me wrong, the 2019 remake of Resident Evil 2, with its third-person, over-the-shoulder perspective, is one of my favorite modern horror games, but what's unique about the classic Resident Evil is that the camera and controls alone are so frightening.

There's a business case to be made that Capcom may have designed the original Resident Evil games with a fixed camera and tank-like controls at least in part due to hardware limitations – although director Shinji Mikami told Game Pro Magazine in 1996 that this was an artistic choice – but still, the fear of the unknown, the lack of complete control freedom, and the ability of the lens to pinpoint specific areas of the screen make this gameplay uniquely terrifying. I'll never forget my first encounter with a Licker, and I think a lot of that was due to the fixed camera.

Now, you can enjoy the modern improvements of Resident Evil 2 Remake with the original game's scariest controls with this mod from alphaZomega. "This is a REFramework mod that allows you to play Resident Evil 2 Remake with a fixed camera, bringing back the original gameplay from the 1998 PlayStation," the description reads.

According to the mod's creator, like in the old Resident Evil games, the game will start with a camera that is fixed to the scene, and then, when you are given the freedom to move, the camera will shift its perspective to areas when you leave a certain area in "a seamless sequence." The mod includes more than 1,700 fixed cameras "all carefully placed," allowing you to play the entire game this way.

The default control scheme moves your character relative to the camera, meaning you'll move in the direction you tap regardless of which way the character is facing. And finally, true to the classics, the mod's tank controls mean you literally move like a tank, making big turns by coming to a complete stop and using the left and right inputs to turn your character and then up and down to actually move. However, "if you hate that, the control commands are very customizable in the mod's options."
