Nikon has agreed to acquire Red Digital Cinema, under a stock purchase agreement with its founder James Jannard and chairman Jarred Land.

Jannard founded Red in 2005 and has since become a key player in the digital cinema camera market. Starting with the 4K Red One camera in 2006, they have since created the V-Raptor [X] and V-Raptor XL [X] systems, the next-generation DSMC3 systems, and the first large-format, universal-shutter cinema cameras available.Their products have recently been used in films such as Mank, Squid Game, Hacks, Navalny, The Queen's Gambit, and The Deepest Breath.

Nikon said the acquisition was made due to the companies’ “shared desires… to satisfy customer needs and deliver exceptional user experiences that exceed expectations.” The two companies now aim to develop “distinct products in the professional digital cinema camera market,” with Nikon aiming to “expand” the digital cinema camera market.
