Upgrade your creative process with the new Nikon Z9 Firmware 5.0, which offers new features and improved ease of use.
If you own a Nikon Z9 then you're used to having one of the best mirrorless cameras on the market, and arguably the best camera for sports photography as well, but you'll be familiar with the firmware updates that have gradually added new features to the camera since its launch.
Today Nikon released version 5.0 of the software for the Nikon Z9, and this software is so massive that it even got its own announcement – a sign, at least, that there are a few features worth mentioning, so I’ll go a step further and say that it makes the Nikon Z9 even better!

“Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce software version 5.00 for its flagship full-frame/FX-format mirrorless camera, the Nikon Z 9. Software version 5.00, the fourth major update since the launch of the Z 9, increases usability for sports photography with the expansion of Auto Capture and High-Speed Frame Capture+ functions.
Portrait photography is also improved to more effectively capture the images photographers want, with new Skin Softening and Portrait Impression Balance functions, and a new Rich Tone Portrait Picture Control that allows for the rendering of details in the subject’s skin with rich tones. In addition, the Z 9 continues to evolve with improved functionality achieved in response to feedback from professionals requesting increased speed and efficiency.” Let’s dive a little deeper into some of the key areas of this new 5.0 software update, shall we?
One of the highlights is the new Auto Capture backup feature. Now, you can set the start date/time and duration of the capture in advance, which is very convenient for saving battery power. Even if you need to set up your camera well before you actually start shooting, you can be sure that it will be ready when you are.
Auto Capture's versatility has been enhanced too. You can now get even more creative with your shots using the DX (24x16) image area, and there's even a new Airplane AF subject detection mode. Plus, a nice little yellow frame has been added to show when the camera is in shooting standby, which is a nice touch.

And that’s not all! They’ve also added a low-speed option (C15) to the High-Speed Frame Capture+ settings, making continuous shooting even smoother, with frequency presets for common LED lights and signs in the High-Frequency Noise Reduction mode. Now you can easily select the perfect shutter speed and minimize the effects of high-frequency noise.
Nikon has also introduced a Rich Tone Portrait Picture Control, which is specifically designed for creating basic images that require post-processing, particularly in scenarios such as weddings and studio photography. In addition, a set of features aimed at improving portrait photography, such as portrait impression balance and skin softness, have been incorporated.
Additionally, Nikon is introducing a range of Nikkor Z lenses, including the Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.2 S, Nikkor Z 85mm f/1.2 S and Nikkor Z 135mm f/1.8 S Plena, all suited to capturing portraits that fully capture the user’s creative vision.
Additionally, the update brings improved convenience by allowing the use of continuous LED light as an AF-assist illuminator. Additionally, a new “Focus point preference (face priority)” option is introduced for smoother navigation when reviewing images with playback magnification enabled.

There are also many other features added to improve the functionality of the Nikon Z9, which are too many to mention here, but one useful feature I saw added is that the live view has now been increased to 400%! It seems like a lot, but whether you are shooting a stunning landscape or framing a static shot for sporting events, you need to know, without a doubt, that everything is in focus!
We’ve seen a lot of big changes to the Nikon Z9 with software. Some brought features that should have been on the camera from the start, like 8K video, while others have improved the camera’s capabilities. Now this new 5.0 software takes the Nikon Z9 to another level of functionality that I’m sure is exciting for me, and I’m sure many other Z9 owners too!

The company concluded its announcement by saying, “Nikon will continually meet the needs of users through software updates that expand the functionality of its cameras.” Perhaps a promise of even more in the future.
