Nintendo: Free Joy-Con drift repairs in Europe

Since 2019, Nintendo has been offering free repairs for the “drift” issue affecting Switch Joy-Con controllers in North America – even if they are no longer under warranty! Over the years, this program has been launched in France and Latin America with great success.

Nintendo recently announced the indefinite extension of its free repair service for affected Joy-Cons, which is now available in the European Economic Area (EEA), the United Kingdom , and Switzerland. Nintendo recently announced on its website, as reported by Nintendo Life, that it is providing repairs for responsiveness issues related to the controllers. In addition, it will fix any existing issues that users may be experiencing due to “wear and tear” or other causes.

European gamers can rest easy knowing that the Switch player warranty is now double what it was before, at 24 months. BEUC’s call for an investigation into the Joy-Con responsiveness issue in 2021 was backed by overwhelming evidence – 88% of the 25,000 complaints they received were from users whose controllers showed signs of non-existent movement within two years. The standard warranty in Europe ensures that repairs are covered for almost all cases. Now, Nintendo is allowing gamers to have their controllers repaired for free – even after the warranty period has expired.

BEUC hailed this progress as a “tangible victory for consumers,” but acknowledged that it is merely a “short-term solution.” A major concern for the group is that Nintendo will still be able to sell its defective product , leading to premature failure – something they want to see banned in Europe.

In recent years, Nintendo Switch players have suffered from a major frustration: Joy-Con Drift. Joy-Con Drift is an issue that occurs with the Nintendo Switch’s Joy-Con controllers. This issue occurs when the controller perceives that there is movement in the Joy-Con when in fact there is not. This can lead to unwanted in-game actions and affect battery consumption when the controller is in sleep mode or has a poor connection to the Switch

Although Nintendo has been sued for selling Joy-Con controllers with a hidden defect, the company has vehemently denied the allegations. Despite president Shuntaro Furukawa expressing regret and apologizing in 2020, the issue continues to frustrate fans to this day.
