YouTube: Introduces New Revenue Sharing Program for Shorts

YouTube has implemented the long-awaited revenue sharing program for Shorts. On Monday, the company revealed a new agreement for the Partner Program that will take effect from February 1, when YouTube content creators will be able to start earning money from ad distribution from Shorts views. If you want to stay in the program, all creators must accept the terms before July 10!

Under the new revenue sharing model, creators will earn money from ads that run between videos in the Shorts feed. YouTube expects the majority of Shorts fund recipients to earn more under the new model.

To join the Partner Program, creators must have at least 1,000 subscribers and 10 million views on their Shorts in the last 90 days. By embracing the new “Shorts Monetization Module,” they will gain more control over how they earn money, deciding which modules to enable or disable. While it is possible to earn without enabling all modules, YouTube recommends that maximizing your earnings involves enabling them .

Licensing music will have a huge impact on a creator’s potential earnings from YouTube Shorts. Revenue earned from pre-Short ads will be shared between rights holders and creators through a distributed pool managed by YouTube, which is then distributed to the parties involved at the end of the month. The percentage of money awarded to the creator team varies depending on the number of music tracks used in a Short. If no music is included, all revenue will go to the creator team . Conversely, if a song is included in your Short, then one-third of any revenue generated will go towards licensing. Additionally, when there are two songs in your video content , two-thirds of all revenue must be spent on licensing both works.

YouTube revenue sharing

Once revenue is distributed, YouTube will determine how creator equity is distributed based on a creator's share of total Shorts views. For example, if your videos accounted for 5% of all eligible Shorts views in country for February, then you'll receive 5% of the money in the fund, whether or not you used licensed music in your Shorts. Creators will receive 45% of the revenue generated from Shorts, with YouTube taking a 55% cut.

It is important to remember that non-original Shorts, including clips from movies or TV shows, reposts of existing content on YouTube or collections without adding original material, will not be eligible for revenue sharing.
