Twitter: Removes Covid-19 misinformation policy

Since Elon Musk took control of Twitter a month ago, the company has been constantly changing its policies – the repeal of the covid-19 misinformation policy is just the latest example.

Twitter introduced its Covid-19 misinformation policy in 2020 during the early days of the pandemic. According to a company report, Twitter has suspended more than 11,000 accounts and removed more than 100,000 pieces of content for violating the policy since it was implemented. Several high-profile figures have been implicated in policy violations, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), whose personal account was suspended in January for questioning the effectiveness of coronavirus vaccines. However, her account was reinstated last week.

Public health experts have praised Twitter's efforts to curb misinformation about Covid. In a 2021 advisory report on tech platforms, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy cited Twitter's policy as an example of how tech companies should combat misinformation.

However, Twitter has also tried to censor misinformation accurately, and recently began labeling some factual information about Covid as misinformation and blocking scientists and researchers who tried to warn the public about the long-term harm Covid-19 can do to the body. As of last weekend, many tweets promoting anti-vaccine content and Covid misinformation remained on the platform.

Jon Shaffer, a health sociologist and postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins' Berman Institute for Bioethics, said he worries that combined with Musk's plan to allow Twitter users to buy a blue verification badge for $8 a month, abandoning the misinformation policy would be particularly dangerous.

According to Lucky Tran, director of science communication at Columbia University, the decision to repeal the COVID-19 misinformation policy will only serve to muddy the waters for the general public.

Yoel Roth, Twitter's former head of trust and safety, said Musk's decision to stop policing Covid-19 misinformation was not only bad but also harmful.

Professionals insist that Musk will lead to additional deaths.

It is easy for misinformation about COVID-19 to spread quickly online due to its high prevalence on social media platforms and other public forums. It is important for everyone to stay informed, relying on reliable sources like the World Health Organization rather than unreliable ones like social media influencers or YouTube videos.
