Hackers have focused on oil and gas companies!

According to a recent Kaspersky report, hackers have targeted 39.3% of computers used in oil and gas production, energy plants, automotive manufacturing facilities, building automation systems, and other industries in Nigeria, as well as other countries in Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey.

According to the report, computers in industrial environments were the subject of multiple attacks from January to September 2022.

From January to September 2022 in Nigeria, various types of malicious objects were blocked on 38.7 percent of ICS computers.

"Of these, 19.4 percent originated from the Internet and 3.5 percent of attacks were carried out via email clients. 10.7 percent of attacks were carried out via removable media."

According to the research, ICS computers in oil and gas companies faced 39.3% of attacks during three quarters of 2022 across the region. Those used for building automation came in second place with 38.8% of targeting, and energy sector were third with 36%.

The company said: “In the META region (Middle East, Turkey and Africa), malicious objects were blocked on 38 percent of ICS computers in the region protected by Kaspersky solutions, according to Kaspersky ICS CERT statistics.

“Currently, 31.8% of ICS computers worldwide have blocked malicious objects. In the coming months, experts expect APT attacks against industrial systems to become even more sophisticated.”

“ICS computers are used across industries to perform a range of OT functions – from engineer and operator workstations to supervisory control and data collection servers and Human Machine Interface.

“Cyberattacks on industrial computers are very dangerous because they can lead to production line disruption and material losses. In fact, if an industrial enterprise goes out of business, this could have serious negative impacts on the well-being of an entire region.”

The company predicts that ransomware attacks on ICS environments will increase over the next two years.
