As spotted by the iPhone Ticker blog, German iPhone users can now secure a digital representation of their ID and driver's license on their iPhone. After the "ID Wallet" was updated to version 1.6, it is now officially supported by the Federal Transport Authority and the Federal Printing Office.
To activate your driver's license on your iPhone, you first need a valid ID card with online functionality enabled – you can check this on the AusweisApp2 website. After scanning your ID, if everything is OK, you can save your driver's license in the “ID Wallet” app.
With this application, it is possible to issue the digital driver's license certificate on the Federal Transport Authority website or directly from Wallet.
In the future, the app could be used by car-sharing companies to check the validity of a driver's license. Another option would be to use the "ID Wallet" app for easy check-in at hotels, which is currently being tested.

With iOS 15, Apple announced the integration of the user ID into the Wallet app. Unfortunately, this is not the case in Germany. In fact, the “ID Wallet” is not “integrated” with Apple Wallet ,like many other government apps. Nevertheless, it is a great option to have your driver’s license on your iPhone.
