What are the needs of doctors and what can technology do?

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to rapid adoption of digital health technologies, and doctors understand that innovations like “augmented intelligence” will play a bigger role in the delivery of care over the next five years. But what are the real needs of doctors and how can technology help them?

To ensure the digital health boom lasts beyond the pandemic, doctors say these technologies must address their greatest needs, a recent Deloitte report says.

The rapid growth of virtual health – brought about by COVID-19 – offers some useful lessons about the adoption of digital technologies by physicians, the report says.

Interoperability: Nearly 85% of physicians expect to have secure and efficient patient data exchange, and 83% believe that patient-generated data will be integrated into medical care delivery in the next five to 10 years.

Doctors said other developments – such as artificial intelligence, hands-on robotic surgery or the hospital at home – are less likely to see widespread adoption in the same timeframe.

According to the survey, physicians view interoperability as a necessary tool for other innovations. For medical technology to meet this need, new technologies must offer engaging and easy-to-use interfaces and must integrate seamlessly with existing EHRs and clinical systems, the Deloitte report states.

Improved workflow: More than 60% of physicians also said their biggest need today is improving daily processes. Nearly three-quarters (73%) said advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotic process automation could save significant time and resources, while 49% said they could increase job satisfaction.

However, physicians' tolerance for poorly designed, difficult-to-use solutions that reduce patient interactions is waning, the report said. To that end, manufacturers need to focus on how products can create value for patients and physicians.

Automation: Doctors are also excited about the potential of “augmented intelligence.” Just over half (54%) of doctors surveyed expect “machines” to automatically read and interpret various medical tests. However, 64% expect AI to help predict and diagnose disease , as well as prevent acute events.

At least, 61% believe that artificial intelligence, along with augmented and virtual reality, sensors , and remote care, will help patients change behavior and take control of their personal care.

Data Security: Physicians have many unanswered questions about cybersecurity and the integrity of algorithms behind advanced technology solutions.

Sixty-nine percent of doctors wanted to know who would be held liable when a medical error occurs using technology, and 47% have various questions about cyberattacks.

Providing products and services tailored to the top four needs of physicians will not only facilitate adoption but also increase impact, the report said.
