Most of us use emoji on our iPhones, but until recently, finding the right one was difficult. Luckily, with the release of iOS 14, you can search for emoji directly in the Emoji keyboard in any app on your iPhone. Here's how to do it.
First, open the app you want to type an emoji in. Tap on any text input area and when the on-screen keyboard appears, tap the emoji button.
(If you don't see the emoji button on the on-screen, it means the emoji keyboard has been turned off in Settings. To turn it back on, go to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards. Tap "Add New Keyboard." Select "Emoji.")
When the emoji keyboard appears, tap the “Search Emoji” text entry area. If you don’t see the “Search Emoji” area, you’ll need to update your iPhone to iOS 14 first.
Type a word that describes the emoji you’re looking for, and you’ll see potential matches appear horizontally in an area just below the search. And you can search by category. For example, typing “fire” will bring up emojis of flames, a fireball, a fire truck, and more.
If you type a word with a large number of possible matches (like “animal”), you can scroll through them by swiping left or right across the search. As you swipe, more emojis will appear.
When you find the emoji you want to use, tap it and it will be inserted into the app you are using.
This technique only works on the iPhone, but the emoji search bar may soon come to the iPad in a future update. For now, if you want to search for emoji on your iPad, you'll have to use the older "predictive text" technique.
