Facebook recently announced that the Messenger app for iOS devices will be redesigned and will be smaller, faster, and simpler to use than the current version. The company claims that the new version will load in half the time and is expected to be released in the coming weeks.
According to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the new Messenger for iOS will offer users faster speeds and better responsiveness than the rest of the apps they use. The company said in a blog post that to make the app lighter and faster, it completely overhauled the Messenger for iOS codebase.
Facebook simplified the codebase by 85% compared to the previous version. The app contained 1.7 million lines of code, but now that number has been reduced to 360,000 lines. This design has made the app faster and reduced its size by 75%.
However, the fact that the application has become lighter results in some of its features not yet being available. The company has not yet stated which functions will be removed from the application.
As TechCrunch reports, the latest version of Facebook Messenger for iOS will remove the Discover tab. This feature represents various businesses and chatbots so that someone can communicate with them via messages.
Facebook said it is working to bring back the broken features as soon as possible to Messenger for iOS, but it has not set a timeline for that. The company declined to comment and did not officially reveal the names of the features that will be removed in the latest update.
The redesign of Messenger was announced by Facebook in May 2018, and it assured users that the new design would focus on simplifying the application.
