A UN spokesman said the organization has banned its officials from using WhatsApp as a means of communication, as it does not consider it a secure platform .
This decision comes after the UN accused Saudi Arabia of hacking the phone of Amazon and Washington Postowner Jeff Bezosthrough his WhatsApp account.
The UN expert also stated that they have relevant information that suggests the involvement of Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's crown prince and heir to the throne, in this case.
Based on a forensic report conducted by FTI, the United Nations has requested an investigation by the US and other relevant authorities. Reports said that iPhone was hacked through a malicious video file, which was sent from a WhatsApp account used by the Saudi Arabian prince.
When asked whether United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had communicated with the Saudi or any other world leader via WhatsApp, officials responded negatively.
As stated by UN spokesman Farhan Haq, none of the organization's officials are allowed to use WhatsApp as a means of communication, as it is considered unsafe.
He also stated that he does not believe that the UN Secretary-General uses WhatsApp, nor does any other official, following closely the guidelines given by the organization, as early as June 2019.
For its part, WhatsApp stated that it takes the security of messages exchanged on its platform very seriously.
Digital security expert Oded Vanunu said that every app has a flaw that could be exploited by a professional hacker in one way or another, but concluded that WhatsApp's security policies are an "impossible dream" for many competing platforms.
