Yahoo Groups the company announced their deletion

Yahoo has announced that it will delete all content from its free online discussion platforms, Yahoo Groups.

Yahoo said the Yahoo Groups website will continue to exist, but users will no longer be able to upload new content starting October 21. Starting December 14, all content posted to the site will be permanently deleted. Yahoo Groups

This content includes files, polls, links, photos, folders, databases, calendars, file attachments, conversations, email updates, message reviews, and message history.

"You have until that date to save anything you uploaded," the announcement says.

Users will be able to download their data from the website's privacy dashboard, according to Yahoo's announcement.

The company also says that all public groups will become private, to continue to provide administrators with limited access to some of the group settings and some of the management tools.

Any new group member will need to request an invitation or be invited by an administrator to join a private one.

Yahoo continues to state that users who still wish to share information and files from Yahoo Groups can do so via email.

“You will be able to communicate with your groups via email and search for private groups on the site,” the company says.

Yahoo did not state the reason for this decision in its announcement.

Yahoo was acquired by Verizon in a deal worth $4.5 billion in 2017.

Earlier this year, Verizon said goodbye to Tumblr, which it sold to Automattic, the parent company of WordPress. Verizon had also acquired Tumblr as part of its Yahoo acquisition deal.

Yahoo had purchased Tumblr in 2013 in a deal worth $1.1 billion.
