Europol: Training police officers with…. a game!

EuropolIn recent years, cryptocurrencies have been a frequent target of hacker. For this reason, Europol has decided to train police officers to be able to effectively deal with crimes related to cryptocurrencies. It will achieve this through a kind of game.

The announcement of this game was made by Europol itself, at the 6thCryptocurrency Conference. Europol said that this is the first time that such a method has been used to train staff in the investigation and detection of these crimes. It will be used for the first time in October, at the Europol-Interpol Cybercrime Conference.

The trainees, who will participate in the game, will monitor and try to detect illegal cryptocurrency.

The game, created by Europol and the Centre of Excellence in Terrorism, Resilience, Intelligence and Organised Crime Research (CENTRIC), is intended for investigators to gain “virtual experience” in dealing with real-world challenges associated with investigating crimes involving cryptocurrencies.

Training staff using games may sound funny, but in reality, it can prove to be extremely useful when applied to real-life incidents of theft, phishing attacks, and many other types of fraud.

Detecting illegal cryptocurrency transactions is not an easy task. That is why law enforcement agencies are placing special emphasis on training personnel for these incidents, especially after the case of the Crypto Mixing service, Bestmixer.

Europol shut down Bestmixer, which had obtained millions of dollars from money laundering.

Another case that has made authorities more concerned with cryptocurrency-related crimes is the Wall Street Market case. The Dark Web market was also shut down in May after the operators committed a fraud and disappeared with over $14.2 million in cryptocurrencies.

The idea of using games to train investigators and police officers is quite interesting and could really help in tackling cryptocurrency-related crimes.
