WWDC 2019 kicked off yesterday, with Apple showcasing all the software, hardware , and other new features it has in store for the year. Among other things, it has introduced dark mode for iOS 13, the new Mac Pro, upcoming titles for Apple TV+, and the new iPadOS.
However, the company didn't just stop at product launches. Apple CEO Tim Cook didn't forget to reveal to the conference attendees the usage rates of iOS 12 compared to Android Pie. Specifically, he said that iOS 12 is used by 85% of Apple iDevices, while he joked that Android Pie, which is created by the "other company", is only used by 10% of devices.
This statement comes after a “war” broke out between the two companies over privacy. You may have heard that Apple and Google recently started a privacy dispute after Google CEO Sundar Pichai indirectly accused Apple of selling “luxury goods” in the name of privacy.
Apple's Craig Federighi responded to the accusations in an interview and criticized the well-known search company for powering its products with data collection.
It's not clear if this is yet another Apple response to the ongoing feud between the two companies, but it has certainly hit Google where it hurts the most. For the record, the first Androidwas released 10 years ago. Also, most users have not yet received the latest updates. Unless you own a Pixel device, it usually takes months for the latest Android version to reach the majority of Android users.
Of course, we can't ignore the fact that Android runs on a wide variety of devices. So it's understandable that it takes more time, as well as the willingness of device manufacturers to optimize an update for so many devices. However, Microsoft has a similar story, but it manages to cope.
Of course, no one can help but admit that it is interesting and entertaining to watch how the two companies try to insult each other on public platforms, without directly naming each other.
