Microsoft improves Linux Subsystem Security

LinuxEverything seems to be going well when it comes to the Microsoft – Linux:

Earlier this week, the company released its own version of Linux in the form of Azure Sphere OS. And before that, it was announced that more Linux distributions will now be available through the Microsoft Store.

The latest news is that the company has decided to bring the benefits of Windows Defender Firewall to the Linux subsystem (WSL). In other words, WSL is now supported by the Windows Defender Firewall. The company made this announcement alongside the release of Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 17650 to the Skip Ahead Ring.

As a result of this change, Windows 10 users can now add specific rules for specific WSL processes to the Defender firewall. The process is similar to adding rules for any regular Windows process.

This change will also allow one to take advantage of firewall notifications for WSL. So, when a Linux tool tries to allow access to a port via SSH or a web server, Defender Firewall will notify you to grant it access.
