Asa Cannell has created a new thermal scanner that is small enough to carry on your keys, while providing all the functionality of his expensive thermal camera, but at a much lower cost.

The keychain with the tiny thermal scanner has launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise the $35,000 needed to put the device into production.
A company spokesperson said: “Scan surfaces for thermal variations using the deltaK, a new type of thermal scanner that offers much of the functionality of a thermal camera, but at a much lower cost and small enough to fit on a key ring. As the deltaK moves over a surface, it emits a tone that changes to orange as the temperature of the surface being scanned changes relative to where the scan started. This makes it easy to find temperature variations on a surface, which would normally require a thermal camera.
The deltaK has three sensitivity ranges, which allow it to be used on surfaces with large or small temperature fluctuations. For example, the less sensitive range could be used to detect a self-propelled cooling system, while the more sensitive range could be used to scan a wall for hot or cold objects beneath the surface. Even a 1°F change can easily be detected at the highest sensitivity setting. Under certain conditions, it is sensitive enough to detect wood nails in a wall.
A very important feature of the deltaK is that all temperature readings are made relative to the starting point. When the deltaK is activated, it immediately measures and stores the temperature being scanned. All further measurements are reported relative to this starting point, until the power switch is released.”
