Friday morning was unusually special and strange for the residents of America as they were unable to access many websites. This happened because the company Dyn, which manages critical parts of the internet infrastructure, was attacked by hackers. The result of the cyberattack was that the switchboard they use for the internet was affected.
According to recent user reports, connection problems were encountered on several websites such as Twitter, Netflix, Spotify, Airbnb, Reddit, Etsy, SoundCloud and The New York Times.
The company spokesperson announced that the FBI and the US Department of Homeland Security are investigating the case and examining all possible causes that could have led to such a breach.
Dyn chief strategist Kyle York told Reuters in an interview that the number, type, duration and complexity of these attacks are on the rise, making their work more difficult. He continued by saying that the malicious traffic was coming from connected devices, including cameras and digital video recorders.
It should be noted that security researchers have always expressed concerns about interconnected devices, as companies are taking inadequate security measures
On Friday, Dyn tweeted that the problem had been resolved, but that they were still investigating the attack for security reasons. "The connection issue has been temporarily resolved, but our company is investigating the attacks on our infrastructure," the company said.
