The Linux Mint development team has just released the ISO images of the Linux Mint 18 beta version to the public. So starting today you can download the “flavor” you are interested in (Cinnamon and MATE) and try out the new Mint 18 “Sarah” on your computer.

Let's see what the new version brings.

Linux Mint 18 is based on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and has the following software and Kernel packaged:

Kernel: 4.4.0-21
Firefox 46
VLC 2.2.2
Gimp 2.8.16
LibreOffice 5.1.2.2
Cinnamon 3.0.5

Of course, it also includes new “X-apps”:

A new media player based on totem, called “Videos” and available in the applications menu. You can run it with the command xplayer.
A new text editor based on pluma (the default editor application of MAT), xed.
A new image viewer based on eog. It is called xviewer.
A document reader based on atril, called xreader.

In addition to new and updated applications, Mint 18 comes with new icons and a new GTK theme called Mint-Y. It is not enabled by default. It can be enabled from Control Center – Themes. It is worth mentioning that in addition to the new themes, version 18 also brings new wallpapers.
