Sheila Drew from the United Kingdom is accused of internet piracy and has already received two letters demanding a fine of £600. The strange thing about this case is that Sheila is 82 years old.
In September 2014, TorrentFreak was informed of a case that was brought to court in the United Kingdom. In the case, the plaintiff was TCYK LLC and the defendant was the Internet service provider Sky.
TCYK is one of the initials of the film The Company You Keep directed by and starring Robert Redford who appears alongside Susan Sarandon and Shia LeBeouf.
Evidence filed by TCYK LLP in court included Sky IP addresses that downloaded the film, forcing the company to hand over the names and addresses of subscribers who allegedly illegally downloaded the film.
Since last summer, Sky customers have begun receiving letters with the indictment and fines demanding hundreds of pounds in compensation.
One of the recipients of these letters is Sheila Drew who lives in the Black Country, an old industrial area in the heart of the West Midlands. She is an 82-year-old pensioner and is being pressured by TCYK to pay a £600 fine because the film was downloaded from her connection.
Sheila Drew told the BBC:
"I'm upset, I've been accused of something I didn't do."
We will not examine whether the fact is true or false, but how an authority can adjudicate cases where the accusations are based on IP addresses.
As evidence, we cite the irrefutable evidence that proves that someone committed a criminal act. An IP address, of course, cannot convict its owner and the law should probably be changed.
But until then, Sheila will have to pay the fine..
