Lithium-ion batteries may be banned from planes

The United Nations recommends that rechargeable lithium-ion (lithium ion) batteries not be permitted on airplanes and that their presence on them be fully prohibited.

The reason is the possibility of a fire in the lithium-ion. Similar bans have recently been imposed by airlines around the world, which do not allow hoverboards on planes due to the batteries they contain.

The UN panel says the potential for a chain reaction fire caused by a malfunction in lithium-ion batteries means the devices should not be on planes. Its recommendations do not include cargo flights, according to The Guardian.

If the United Nations pass such a ban, it is certain that it will have a large and immediate impact on passenger travel. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which is responsible for this matter, will meet next month to make a final decision regarding whether the proposal should be implemented.
