FBI: Sony hackers failed to hide their IP addresses

The hackers who attacked Sony Pictures Entertainment in November 2014 failed in many cases to mask their location through proxy connections and revealed their real IP addresses, FBI James Comey said Wednesday.fbi about sony

Comey delivered a speech at the annual International Conference on Cyber Security (ICCS) in New York City at Fordham University and revealed some of the details of the investigation into the Sony hack.

James Comey said that the Guardians of Peace (GoP), the hackers who claim to have attacked Sony, used proxy connections to hide their real IP addresses whenever they sent emails or made statements. But in some cases, either because the service was down or because they simply forgot to route their connection, the traffic came directly from their real addresses, which are used exclusively by North Korean actors.

Comey added that he could not reveal more as his agency must protect its sources because he believes such incidents will happen again.

Although the director added another piece to the Sony hack puzzle, the security community can expect more information about the evidence that the FBI had supporting the North Korean actor being the one behind the attack.
