The European Central Bank (ECB) announced today a security breach in a database on its public website, which resulted in the theft of email addresses and other data relating to people who registered for events organized by the bank.
As emphasized in the related announcement, internal systems or sensitive procurement data were not breached. «The database serves sections of the EKΤ website that collect records for events such as EKΤ meetings and visits. It is naturally separated from any internal EKΤ» it is noted.
The incident became known after an anonymous email was sent to the bank, demanding monetary compensation for the data. Although most of the data was encrypted, parts of the database contained email addresses, some street addresses and phone numbers, which were not encrypted. Also, the database contains information about downloads from the EKΤ website in encrypted form.
«EKT communicates with individuals whose email addresses or other data may have been compromised and were proactively changed; all passwords in the system» is mentioned in the announcement, while it is noted that the problem has been addressed by the bank's security experts and that the German police, which is conducting an investigation, has been informed accordingly.
