According to a publication by Der Spiegel, the US security agency (NSA) is particularly interested in the Organizationof the Petroleum Exporting Countries ( OPEC) and penetrating their network was one of its main priorities.
The German magazine's reports state that the NSA has been able to penetrate OPEC networks since January 2008. Despite having access to data from various OPEC countries in January 2008, it managed to gain access to the entire network.
The current members of OPEC are Algeria, Angola, Ecuador, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela.
The NSA's interest in oil companies first became known with publications that wanted the US secret service to closely monitor the communications of Petrobras, a Brazilian oil company.
