Lavabit and Silent Circle are preparing a new secure email service

It’s been almost three months since Lavabit shut down. But it seems like its founder, Ms. Levison, isn’t giving up. Today, Lavabitand Silent Circle announced that they’re joining forces to launch a new service called Dark Mail. The new service will provide a secure, encrypted peer-to-peer email system that’s much more resistant to government surveillance. They’re calling it the “Dark Mail Alliance.”

"We can't trust the internet anymore. Just like we can't trust governments," Levison said in an interview with Mashable. "So we have to develop a new system that's resistant to these kinds of intrusions."

Dark Mail  will not only be implemented in Silent Circle's new secure email applications, but will also be offered as an open source operating system based on a new XMPP secure protocol architecture developed by Silent Circle called SCIMP ( Silent Circle Instant Messaging Protocol).

The new Dark Mail email service aims to bring us new emails, not the ones we know. Theoretically, the providers (owners) wouldn't even have the decryption keys to hand over to the FBI and NSA if they were ever asked.

The technical details will be published in a few weeks, when everything is ready.
