The Aeroclub of Phocis and Central Greece, or A.FO.ST.EL, will hold its 7th festival this weekend, October 12 and 13, in Itea and the surrounding mountains of Giona.
AFOSTEL club of the wider Amfissa area that deals with paragliding. Its members and friends from all over Greece will gather on Saturday in Malandrino and on Sunday in Agia Efthymia to inaugurate the new take-off runway that was created in the area with the contribution of the Municipality of Delphi.
For those who are not familiar with the sport of paragliding, we inform you that it is a flying device consisting of a “banana”-shaped sail and ropes. The pilot hangs below all of this while sitting in a special seat. There is no engine or any other propulsion device and the flight is carried out only by the power of the air.
Paragliders do not “drop” like round military parachutes but rather perform a normal “flight” that quite often, for Greek standards, reaches 150 km of distance traveled. Flights of distances such as Arachova – Itea or Agia Efthymia Fokida – Davlia Fthiotida are common in this region.
As an aviation device, paragliding falls under the jurisdiction of the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority ( HCAA ) and as a sport, under the jurisdiction of the Hellenic Paragliding Committee ( H.A.P. )
The spectacle that the pilots of these devices usually offer is beautiful, coloring the skies with their colorful sails as they glide through the air. At the same time, such gatherings stimulate the tourist market of the respective area. So, those of you who find yourself this weekend in Itea or in the wider area of Fokida, look up at the sky at 12:00 noon.
