The revelations about the NSA have prompted more and more people to file Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests. The revelations about the NSA's mass surveillance programs, such as PRISM, Boundless Informant, and more, have prompted users to seek more answers.
During the three months following the first reports, FOIA requests to the NSA surged by 1,054%.
There were 3,382 requests addressed to the NSA, while in the same period in 2012 there were only 293 investigations.
The public records request service MuckRock provided the data after asking the NSA for the total number of requests.
The number of applications received was not only higher than that corresponding to the same time period, but was almost double that corresponding to the total for all of 2012 – 1,809.
"Requests have stabilized somewhat since the early summer, when the first leaks emerged, although they are still much higher than normal," says an NSA FOIA spokesperson.
