For the past three months, the entire Internet has been talking about the NSA's spying programs and their impact on protecting our online privacy.
However, despite all the publicity, it seems that many have a different set of priorities.
A survey conducted by the Pew Research Center shows that about 86% of American Internet users try to hide their digital footprints through simple ways, such as clearing their cookies and browser history.
But most of these measures are not taken to avoid government surveillance, but because they are afraid of hackers and cybercriminals. 33% of people who take online security measures do so out of fear of hackers, while 28% do so out of fear of ads.
19% take security measures because they are afraid of their friends or old relationships. Only 5% say they are afraid of government spying programs, while 4% say they are afraid of the law.
