In a statement released a few hours ago, the E-Sports Entertainment Association (ESEA) admitted that client its software was using the CPU computers its members’ mine Bitcoins.
The company was conducting some internal tests with a client that used the GPU of the computers running it to mine Bitcoins. The tests were conducted only two computers and with administrator accounts. On April 14, the company decided that it was “not worth the effort,” and stopped the tests. However, one of the employees involved in the project continued to use the client for his personal gain, having managed to earn € in two weeks.
The issue came to light after many users complained about high CPU usage on their computers, as well as warningsthey were receiving from antivirus programs. “ It has been revealed that over the past two weeks an employee has acted without our permission for his own benefit . We are extremely disappointed and concerned about unauthorized actions such as this , ” ESEA said . “ As of this morning, ESEA has made sure that all Bitcoin mining has stopped, andwe are taking all necessary measures within the company to ensure that this does not happen again. ” The company also announced that all money earned from its customers’ computers will be donated to the American Cancer Society .
