Application Layer Attacks | What they are & how they are exploited by hackers

[su_heading size=”18″ margin=”40″]Application Layer Attacks are one of the most popular types of attacks that target specific vulnerabilities at the application level. All it takes is a small modification to the code and a small tweak to start sending information to hackers.[/su_heading]

One of the easiest ways to compromise a computer system is to exploit software through an Application Layer attack. attacks consume less bandwidth and are more subtle in nature, making them much more difficult to detect.

Even a user with minimal programming knowledge can use some similar technique to hack a system or software.

But let's look at some of the basic methodologies that are known to be used to carry out this type of attack.

Exploitation of software vulnerabilities [su_divider top=”no” divider_color=”#13471e1″ margin=”10″][/su_divider]

One of the most common methods of launching application layer attacks is to exploit software vulnerabilities, which are commonly found in servers. Some of these vulnerabilities are related to Sendmail, PostScript, and FTP. If someone manages to successfully exploit such a vulnerability, they can easily gain access to a computer with the same privileges as the application is running.

Trojan Horse — Application layer attacks [su_divider top=”no” divider_color=”#13471e1″ margin=”10″][/su_divider]

Trojan Horses are nothing more than fake programs that pretend to be genuine. Since they can replicate most of the behavior of real programs, Trojan horses are one of the most common ways to launch Application Layer Attacks.

In addition to replicating the functions of genuine programs, Trojan Horses also have other built-in features that operate in the background, such as monitoring user input and keystrokes to identify passwords and other sensitive information, such as credit card details, etc.

Utilization of HTML, HTTP, and web browser technologies [su_divider top=”no” divider_color=”#13471e1″ margin=”10″][/su_divider]

This is the newest form of application layer attacks. These attacks mainly exploit the open nature of new technologies, such as HTMP, web browsers, HTTP, etc. and are usually based on the exploitation of Java Applets and ActiveX controls. A powerful malicious program passes through the network and is loaded into the user's browser.

This is an advanced version of the aforementioned type of attack. Hackers use ActiveX controls to make them act as Trojan horses. This technique is based on the use of VBScript, and through its exploitation, attackers can overwrite files and even execute other programs.
