Hardware hacker puts 128GB on a floppy disk!

Once upon a time there were 5.25″ floppy disks… the older ones remember them and love them, the younger ones might wonder what they are. But what Dr. Moddnstine managed to do, namely fit 128GB of data onto a 3.5″ floppy, requires effort and is certainly worth our attention!

YouTuber Dr. Moddnstine decided it was time to give his IBM Aptiva a little update that he had been saving since the 90s a try. He got one of the ASUS Maximus VIII mainboards, a Core i7 processor and a Corsair water cooler, 16GB of RAM, and a Radeon R9 390 and it worked wonders…

This is a huge leap from Aptiva's 486 DX/2 hardware, although at first glance it doesn't look like anything has changed. It still looks exactly like it did when I bought it in 1995, but... there are a few surprises hidden behind its vertical sliding door.

You can see the clever placement of the front audio jacks and USB port – which have been hacked into the bezel of the optical drive.

During construction, Dr. Moddinstone noticed the notches on an old floppy ribbon cable and an SD card. He cut the cable so that he had only the wires he needed and connected them together. Then, he broke the USB SD card reader and soldered the necessary connections. Despite all his tinkering, everything still fits comfortably behind the lab cover.

With a few modifications to a floppy drive, like the one shown in the picture, you can fit an SD card behind the cover. Pop it into a modded Aptiva drive and the LEDs will light up… and your system will now have access to 128GB of expanded storage hidden on a humble 1.44MB floppy.
