The Japanese game console surpassed Microsoft's formidable rival in sales

Japanese electronics giant Sony has confirmed that its new PlayStation 4 gaming console has sold more than 4.2 million units since its launch last November.

With these sales figures, Sony is ahead of competition from its main rival, the American Microsoft, which launched its own console, the Xbox One, at almost the same time. In a statement, Sony said that by December 28, PS4 sales had exceeded 4.2 million and it hopes to reach 5 million sales by the end of March worldwide.

"The target is definitely very close and sales continue to grow dynamically. We will definitely reach the target soon," Philippe Cardon, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, told AFP. The Japanese group also announced that the number of subscribers to the PS Online service through which the PS4 is played online has almost doubled (up +90%). "At least half of PS4 owners are subscribers to PS +," Cardon noted.

Just on Monday, Microsoft announced its own sales figures for the Xbox One, stating that three million units had been sold since the console's official launch on November 22. Both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One are in direct competition in the console gaming sector, and for the first time, the two rival companies took a risk and released their flagship products almost simultaneously, just 24 hours apart.
