Millions of dollars in losses have been caused to South African banks through cyberattacks targeting the electronic payment (POS) devices of various fast food outlets.
According to experts, a variant of the “Dexter” malware, which is designed to evade detection by antiviruses, has been used to carry out the attacks.
“Dexter” is one of the most well-known malware designed specifically to steal credit card from electronic payment systems.
According to TechCentral, it is still uncertain how the malware managed to infect the POS devices. However, a significant number of fast food outlets were affected by the attacks, causing huge financial losses to financial institutions in South Africa.
KFC is one of the chains that has been significantly affected by the cyberattacks. Interpol, Europol and the South African Police Service (SAPS) are trying to identify the perpetrators. However, so far, no one has been arrested, and the case is still under investigation.
Experts believe that the criminal organization behind the attacks is based in Europe.
