Hundreds of Holidaymakers hit by Thomson data breach
The holiday company has confirmed that the personal details of 458 customers were leaked via email.
Hundreds of happy holidaymakers will be faced with bad news this week after it was confirmed that their personal details may have been stolen.
Holiday company Thomson has confirmed that some addresses, phone numbers and flight dates of around 500 customers were leaked, due to what the company calls a ‘genuine error.’ However, the company said it is not prepared to pay compensation to any of the 458 customers affected by the leak.
“We are aware that the email was sent in error, which exposed a small number of customers’ information,” the company said in a statement. “The error was quickly identified and the email was retracted, which was done in a significant number of cases.” “We would like to apologize to our customers who were affected by the breach and assure them that we take the security of their data very seriously.” “We are investigating the matter thoroughly to ensure this does not happen again.”
The Thomson data breach is the latest in a series of leaks affecting major companies recently, including the US hack earlier this year that repeatedly stole a billion email addresses.
A report from security firm Iron Mountain earlier this year found that 40% of the public sector has suffered data breaches as staff are reportedly too busy to take the necessary measures.
