According to a survey by Kaspersky Lab and B2B International, one in five businesses believes that IT service providers (and especially network providers) are responsible for protecting their online services from DDoS attacks. 
In reality, however, this responsibility is often borne by the same companies that are attacked, which can cause them significant losses.
Almost every company, regardless of size, is a potential victim of a DDoS attack. According to the survey, among organizations with publicly available online services, 28% of small businesses and 43% of large enterprises suffered a DDoS attack in a 12-month period.
By sector, organizations most affected by DDoS incidents include IT (49%), e-commerce (44%), telecommunications (44%), and media (42%). At the same time, countermeasures to DDoS attacks were rated as important by 53% of telecommunications companies, 50% of IT companies, and only 41% of e-commerce companies and 38% of media companies.
The survey also shows that, on average, 28% of businesses consider that protection against DDoS attacks is not their concern, while only 72% of businesses agreed that combating DDoS is their responsibility.
It is noted that 50% of small businesses agree with this view compared to almost 90% of large businesses. In conclusion, smaller businesses take less responsibility for protecting their services from DDoS attacks. In fact, 40% of small businesses worldwide are certain that they are fully protected by their network provider or web hosting service providers, while less than 9% of large companies share this view.
“By relying on IT service providers for their security, many companies are putting themselves at risk. Vendors usually do not offer this protection as a standard service. Moreover, many providers simply cannot provide reliable protection against DDoS attacks using their own resources, because DDoS attacks are constantly growing and becoming more sophisticated. Reliable security can only be provided by companies that specialize in protection against digital threats and can offer high-performance technologies, which are constantly upgraded to cover the ever-evolving threats,” said Evgeny Vigovsky, Head of Kaspersky DDoS Protection at Kaspersky Lab.
