Last weekend we saw a series of DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks targeting multiple online services, starting with Sony's PlayStation Network and continuing with Blizzard's Battle.net, Riot Games' League of Legends, and many others.
While both Blizzard and Riot Games fixed the problem relatively early and stopped the attacks from affecting their servers, allowing fans to continue playing League of Legends, Hearthstone, Diablo 3, and many other games, Sony wasn't so lucky.
On the other hand, the PlayStation Network was disrupted by the attacks. Considering the fact that PSN servers are connected to larger Sony Entertainment Network servers, this also led to the shutdown of several Sony Online Entertainment multiplayer games, such as PlanetSide 2 or DC Universe Online.
The company had issued a statement confirming that the attacks were responsible for the outage of its servers, but customers should not worry, as users' personal information and data, including credit card details, are safe.
However, instead of bragging about the attacks and mocking Sony, one of the perpetrators, FamedGod, issued a public statement expressing his frustration with the Japanese company and how it could easily implement measures to protect against such attacks.
If we go back in time, we will see that there are many who have gained unauthorized access to Sony's network. This alone should have rung the alarm bells to change their approaches to securing the network.
