The main additions to this release include an interactive map showing VPN server locations and an advanced multi-hop feature, along with several bug fixes. This release is available on GitHub, allowing users to have immediate access to the code and new features. Mullvad, based in Sweden, has established itself as one of the most trusted VPN providers, offering services that keep no logs and ensure user anonymity.

Interestingly, Google Play has not yet listed the update, with Mullvad still listing the previous version 2026.08 as the latest version on the official website. This could be due to procedural issues or delays on Google Play’s part, which often takes longer to approve new app versions. However, users who want to try out the new features can download the app directly from GitHub.

The new redesign was quietly announced on the cloud platform over the past two days, following months of meticulous preparation that included releasing new features in beta in August, with the VPN testing them for nearly a month before launch. This beta process allows Mullvad to identify and fix potential issues before the official launch, ensuring a smooth user experience.

Meanwhile, the Sweden-based VPN continues to ensure transparency, notifying users of an issue with the new version and reflecting the accountability expected of the best VPNs. This transparency is critical to building trust with users, especially in an industry where security and privacy are paramount.

The new version features a rotating globe that highlights the server locations available to users, making the discovery process more immersive and playful. Users can now zoom, pan, scroll, and explore the globe by region to discover the exact locations of all VPN servers, as well as view their own connection paths.

This feature not only offers a more interactive experience, but also allows users to more efficiently select the server that best suits their needs.

Additionally, multi-hop, which routes traffic through two servers for added privacy, can now be automatically enabled when required by your settings and disabled when not needed. This feature first arrived on Android in 2025, following previous arrivals on desktop and iOS. Automating this feature offers users greater convenience and ensures that their privacy protection is always active when needed.

By selecting the new button, users will not need to manually enable multi-hop mode, as the VPN app for Android will automatically enable it when needed. This is especially relevant when DAITA, a security technique that hides network traffic patterns to prevent eavesdropping, is enabled and the selected servers do not directly support it. DAITA is an innovative approach that enhances security by making it more difficult for third parties to monitor user activity.

The system will now recognize this preference and automatically enable multi-hop mode as DAITA requires or benefits from it to function effectively. If DAITA is disabled, the system will fall back to a faster connection to a single server to save bandwidth, allowing the VPN to maintain its reputation for fast speeds. This flexibility is important for users who want to balance security with performance.

The VPN has also optimized its server location search feature, with results displayed in the 'Select Location' field now being sorted by relevance based on how closely they match users' queries. This improvement makes it easier for users to quickly and easily find the right server, improving the user experience and reducing connection time.
