Windows 8.1 users will need to install the new Windows 8.1 Update by June 10th to continue receiving future security updates.
Microsoft announced a few weeks ago that installing the Windows Update is mandatory for all Windows 8.1 users and is a prerequisite for receiving updates.
"While we estimate that the majority of users have received the update, we recognize that this is not yet the case for everyone. Installing the latest updates on our customers' devices is extremely important to us and we are committed to helping keep them secure," the company announced.
The Windows 8.1 Update comes with many improvements, such as the ability to pin Metro apps to the taskbar and launch them without having to go to the start screen.
Additionally, modern apps will now launch in their own, separate window, will have a title bar and buttons for minimizing and closing.
Microsoft emphasized that Windows 8.1 users automatically receive the new update via Windows Update, but in case something goes wrong, they can also try the manual installation.
"Customers who do not upgrade their devices to Windows 8.1 Update by the new deadline will no longer receive updates. We are confident that within the next month, the majority of remaining users who have not updated their devices will be able to do so.".
