Microsoft has released a patch for a dangerous Internet Explorer bug that left the browser highly vulnerable in all major versions – including those running Windows XP.
The update, released on Thursday, May 1 at 10 a.m., before the usual Tuesday updates due to its severity, affected IE 6 through 11 and allowed attackers to install malicious software on any computer without the user's permission, to steal personal data, conduct online surveillance, or gain control of the computer.
The security company FireEye, which discovered the flaw, reported that it saw a vulnerability whose exploitation targeted financial and defense institutions in Internet Explorer 9, 10, and 11.
