After two months of intensive research, Newsweek has identified the inventor of bitcoin. The man behind the digital currency is Japanese Satoshi Nakamoto, with a mysterious career that includes secret work for major American companies and the US military.

As Newsweek journalist Leah McGrath, who tracked him down, writes, “it seems ridiculous that the man who invented Bitcoin—the world’s most successful digital currency with $500 million in daily transactions in its heyday—has retired to the San Bernardino Hills in Los Angeles, where he lives with his family, leaving untouched the $400 million worth of wealth that Bitcoin is estimated to have brought him.”.

She says that Nakamoto's first reaction to the ringing of the doorbell was to call the police, and he answered her questions in the presence of two police officers.

“I am no longer involved and cannot discuss the matter,” the Japanese inventor said. “It has passed to others now. They are responsible. I have no further involvement.”.

According to the same source, the 64-year-old Japanese-American, father of six, has a degree in physics from California State Polytechnic University.

Nakamoto's name first appeared in 2008 in a document proposing the creation of the digital currency. Most believed it was a pseudonym.
